But you can also produce a crisscross pattern by using 2 sets of tiles that have contrasting colors. If you want to use tiles that are narrow, go for the running bond. The pattern here mimics the pattern you see on a brick wall.

Cobblestone is a bit more complicated but is very attractive. The pattern is produced by utilizing 10 tiles of 2 varying dimensions in each section. The corridor comprises of 2 sets and sizes of tiles. You can make a grid pattern using narrow rectangular tiles to produce breaks between larger tiles. Other interesting and complex patterns include the basketweave, herringbone, windmill and circular pattern.

Color Ideas

One of the recent trends is the contrasting colors theme. New modern designs have kitchen walls that contrast the kitchen floor tiles in terms of color. For instance, you can have white walls and black granite kitchen flooring. The color scheme makes the kitchen look very striking and quite beautiful.

Edge Detailing

Some home owners want to add interest to their flooring without going overboard. Edge detailing can definitely add interest, but in a subtle way. This patten comprises of a central field area enclosed in a perimeter border. The border can be the same floor tile used elsewhere in the kitchen, but rotated. Or, it can be a set of completely different tiles or mix of tiles. This is also referred to as a rug pattern.

Going Green

For those who want Eco-friendly kitchen flooring, bamboo is a great option. Bamboo is renewable and is beginning to replace hardwood as more and more people are becoming environmentally conscious. Bamboo does have other important qualities. It is highly resistant to water and provides a one-of-a-kind, novel appearance to contemporary kitchens. The price of bamboo is not the cheapest, but it isn’t the most expensive either.
